3 ways to get loud

You don’t have to start by jumping into the deep end! Take it one step at a time as you build muscle memory around sharing your voice, your vision, and your stories.

  • 1. Notice

The first step to getting louder: Noticing the volume of voices all around you, including yours.

    Reflect and observe:

    • Where in your life are your authentic voice and vision shining through? Where are they absent

    • As you go through your day — at home, at work, on social media, and in your community — whose voices seem to get the most attention?

    • Who is someone whose volume repels you, and why? Whose volume do you admire, and why?

  • 2. Experiment

Begin to experiment with new ways to turn up the volume on YOU.

Play, try, see how it feels:

    • Instead of posting something you think you “should” share on social media, post something that moves you.

    • If you don’t often share stories from your day over dinner, try doing so.

    • Get out some paint, create a sign, and participate in a protest on an issue that matters to you

    • Try an improv class to get more comfortable with public speaking.

  • 3. Connect

You’ve noticed. You’ve experimented. Now, remember that you don’t have to go it alone. It’s so much easier to get loud when you realize your voice is part of a chorus.

    Find strength in numbers:

    • Look for groups of other women who share your interests, whether online (such as a Facebook group) or in person (like a book club).

    • Make a pact with other women who work with you to amplify each other’s ideas in meetings. For example, “I really like what Suzanne said about puppies…”
