Scenes from a life

This week, I thought I’d share an exercise I’ll be doing with my story campers:

  1. Pretend you’re a journalist, reporting the story of your life.

  2. Reflect on the past week — look at your calendar if it helps — and choose three moments, experiences… three things that happened.

  3. For each of the things you choose, write 1-3 sentences to describe the scene. Ask yourself: Where was I? Who else was there? What happened? How did I feel?

  4. Now, ask yourself what you notice about the three scenes you described. For example: Do they have anything in common? For example, are they all about work, or all about life outside of work? Are they all moments of stress, or moments of joy?

That’s it. That’s the exercise. There’s no big “aha” here except beginning to train yourself to “watch” your life a bit, reflect on what happens, and put words to it. This becomes the underlying muscle that lets you develop a habit of sharing experiences, ideas, learnings, etc. online on a more regular basis. And the more you do this — the more you show up on a platform that reaches millions of people all around the world — the stronger a beacon you shine, and the easier it is for the people who are trying to find you, to do just that.

You are a mighty forces.
