Being your own BFF

Hello, everyone.

I’m sharing a picture of me because (a) Hi! and (b) I couldn’t find an image that fit conceptually with this week’s quote.

Speaking of which, let’s get right to it….

Quote

“Be the person you want to live with every day of your life.”

- Dr. Mary Pipher’s grandmother, whose wisdom Pipher discusses in this exceptional essay for the New York Times, How I Build a Good Day When I’m Full of Despair at the World (THANK YOU to my client Suzanne for sharing it with me)

Questions

  1. When you read this quote, what’s the first thing that flashes into your mind as a way you could keep yourself better company?

  2. Are you willing to experiment with being a better companion to yourself? If so, check out this article from my husband, Jordan, who is a life and career coach: Change Sounds Scary? Try an Experiment Instead.

I’ll share that the first thing that came up for me is, “I would do the thing more, rather than thinking about doing the thing.” For example, yesterday, I had the impulse to find somewhere by the Hudson River to sit and watch the sunset, but talked myself out of it (too much driving, getting late, etc.). If my life were a TV show, the episode where she actually watches the sunset would be a whole lot more fun to watch.

You are a mighty force.

- Amanda
